What is hypnosis?

According to the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, "Hypnosis is a state of inner absorption, concentration and focused attention." Although nobody knows exactly what a trance is. Everyone has experienced a trance at times in your life, such as when you are deeply engrossed in a book or movie, your concentration and attention are so focused that you can be easily startled by an outside sound. Or you were so engrossed in driving or doing something that you didn't know where the time went. These are examples of the mildly altered state of consciousness you experienced as a trance.

Is it a new concept?

Hypnosis is at least 6000 years old and has been documented in studies of altered states of consciousness in Ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Indian and Chinese cultures. Hypnosis has continued to be studied for its medical and therapeutic benefits. Today it is being studied in research laboratories around the world by medical and professional people and organizations, such as the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. Hypnosis is even being taught in some medical schools.

How can hypnosis help?

Hypnosis has many different clinical uses. It can be used to achieve a deep state of relaxation, reduce and manage pain, as well as anxiety and fears. Hypnosis can be used to enhance changes in habits and unwanted behaviors. It is often used to promote healing. In China it is used as an anesthesia for operations. The possibilities are endless.

Is there a difference between individual and group hypnosis? Some people benefit from group hypnosis. In an individual session of hypnosis, the trance is based on your specific needs and situation which often has better results due to the personal nature of the trance.

Generally, you will be aware of your surroundings and remember what happened during the trance. You will be in total control. You will not do things that are against your morals or principles. Television and movies are about entertainment and exaggeration. The only thing necessary is an open mind and a desire for change.
